I need advice...

I have just cut the muffler off my 2000 Ford F-250, 7.3 Powerstroke and only have a straight pipe now. I love the sound of it, but since I have been listening and looking at my exhaust, I have noticed something. Everytime I get on the gas pedal it blows dark black smoke out the exhaust. I have noticed a considerable amount more of horse power since I took the muffler off, but the smoke bothers me. Is this nomal for a Powerstroke, diesel, etc? Should I worry? Any advice would help, this is my first diesel and I love, thanks!

Hmm, without a chip or tuner or any other sort of fuel/power adder, you shouldn't get much if any black smoke when you're stock. Couple possibilities are a pretty clogged air filter or a boost leak (both would keep you from getting the air you need, and hence the fuel wouldn't combust as well, and thus the black smoke).

The muffler delete shouldn't have anything to do with it.

how much louder is it without the muffler? i was thinkning of removing mine as well, just to free up the exhaust flow, but dont want it to get too loud. i actually thought of getting one of the straight through mufflers with a few baffles. decisions, decisions.

DO IT, DO IT, Dont think, Just do IT. at idle it really is not that noticable, certainly not offensive, In some states a turbo is considered a muffling device. you will not have that load RAW brrap, brapp, brapp, as you would with a gasser. Now, when you get on the go pedal, you will notice a louder exhuast note, still, not offensive, but louder. Many moons ago i ran a BTM walker muffler and decided that I wanted a little more, so off came the muff. in went the 4" pipe and the rest is history. Most likely your wife won't even notice.

I did add the superchip, is that whats making it smoke? And as far as the muffler delete, it took me two weeks to decide if I wanted to cut it off or not. I didnt want it to be to loud. Now that I did delete it, I wish I would have done it two weeks ago. It sounds perfect. Its not loud crusing through town, but sounds good when I get on it. Back to the smoke, do I worry or not? I appreciate any advice.

Ryan is right about the smoke, but I must say that when I ran my straight pipe (disconnected all from muffler section back) before my Cannon, I noticed some smoke when I got on it. That was before chipping. I think it just spooled faster and caused the PCM to deliver more fuel. Of course chipping it will definitely deliver some smoke.

A fatter pipe will reduce the smoke because it let's the engine breath easier.
