Ok I'm almost ready to mount my OD trans in my 56, and now it occurs to me that the mounting flange on the tailshaft doesnt align with any cross member or frame structure. The mount is on the bottom of the casing, so I'm assuming that there would be some kind of cradle style crossmember that it attaches to. Can anyone with an OD trans take a look at theirs and lead me in the right direction with this? If anyone has a picture of how it should look that would be even better. Thanks ahead of time,
Bumping this to the top. Was hoping my new "digital version" of the illustration manual would help with this question, but no. I can post a standard frame schematic, but not much for pics on the overdrive. Is this the stock overdrive? Not sure they had a crossmember, my little teeny 3-speed (sans overdrive) just hangs there in space off the bellhousing....
Yeah I searched the catalogs too and couldnt find any information about an extra crossmember for the OD tailshaft. I just can't understand though why it would have that mount on the bottom unless it should bolt to something.

Guess why? You have either a passenger car o/d housing, or one from a different truck model or yr. That's why that mount won't fit. The cars have a crossmember there, some of the later trucks do too.
Not only that, but if it's a T-85N, R9 or R11 o/drive, the internal parts are the same as Ford, but the actual unit could be off something besides a Ford product. Kaiser-Frazer-Studebaker-Packard-Nash-Hudson-******, even some Chevies used either an R9 or R11 at one time.

Bill, in the 56 parts catalog it shows the mount on the OD tailshaft, just doesnt show what (if anything) it bolts to.
Mike
I know, I saw your Q earlier and went looking through the 48/56; 57/63 and 64/72 books for a crossmember, then it dawned on me why I couldn't find one...the unit is from a car, and the cars have a cross member there. Or it's off a non Ford, see added info above. I now have all the car parts books. Lemme see what I can find...will post again.
You are gonna have to fab something.

Well here's a question for the both of you...how'd you come across this unit? One of the additions I'd love to make to mine is to find an OD unit to go on mine. The old 3.93 gears are wonderful if I ever decide to pull a little trailer or something, and good for around town, but the freeway would be much nicer with the OD. I'd explored it before, but didn't know what kind of donor vehicles carry the unit before I went junkyard hopping.
The whole wire-up/kickdown/hoo-ha looks like a nice challenge to sort out and recreate. Assume a matching driveshaft would be required.
Then why does it show the mount in the 53-56 ford TRUCK catalog if its from a car?
Mike
Because it's a general picture...for finding the part numbers only. The same exact pic is shown in the 49/59 car parts catalog (section 70, pg 197). Parts catalogs aren't shop manuals, and the pics....especially for mechanical parts, aren't always one model/vehicle specific.
My ford truck shop manual does show the same mount though in multiple pictures. So I dont need to mount the tailshaft to anything in my 56? I wonder why they would use the same tailshaft in cars and trucks, and yet only cars utilized the mount.
Bill,
I checked out section 60, the mount that I am talking about is not an engine mount. The rear engine mount is the bellhousing itself. This is only on the tailshaft of the transmission, I'm guessing for extra support of the trans because of the longer length.

Do you have the actual engine/transmission already bolted to a crossmember? When overdrive is present, that's where the transmission mounts..at the O/D unit. If your engine/transmission is already bolted at the rear...I'd say, just disregard that mount. Get a second opinion please, from dueller or one of the other 50's pros to be sure.
Yeah, the engine is already mounted at the rear by the bellhousing. I'm starting to think that the tailshaft mounts arent necessary, but I will check around. Thanks for the help and references.
