I need to replace one of teh Air vent plastic louvers. There's 4 on my dash (93 XLT F350 crew) and of the two on either side of the steering wheel I doing the right side one (next to steering wheel)...what's a easy way to pull the plastic dash peice? It looks like it attachs below the gauges and around the top of the main dash. I don't see any screws or anything. Looks like there's alot of switches attached as well. HELP!!!
Remove the two trim pieces (one on either side of the steering column) with a pick or knife. They are just in there on clips, they pop off. Underneath those you will find torx head screws. After that the dash piece with the gauge cluster will also just pop out.
I'll give you a tip that usually works for me. I usually take a long thin folding knife, and slide it under the bottom at about a 30*angle, then tilt the blade upward from the back until it pops. Don't know if thats very easy to understand without seeing it...
This trick usually scratches the trim piece on the bottom back portion, but that part is totally covered by the dash when its in it. I figure it better to scratch the back part than to snap the thing in half...
It isnt necessary to remove any of the dash parts to remove the louvers. Just take a butter knive and slide it between the louver assembly and the opening in the dash in the 9 or 3 oclock position--and the louver assembly will release from the dash.
If you look close at the louvers you'll see a raised edge inside......mine had broken slats anyway and i just used a needlenose to pull them out.....pull a little toward the center as you pull out......new ones just push in till they snap in place. piece of cake.
I bought a new part and I thought I could psuh it trhugh as well...made sense to me, but these are screwed in from the back...has to screws tabs on the top of the vent and two on the bottom...looks like no matter what I have to install from the rear..

You want to replace the louvers only--right? Not the duct behind the louvers?? The louvers remove from the front without removing the dash. Unless someone has southern engineered it.
phoneman, what kind of oil do you use? I see synthetic. I'm thinking of changing to a type like that as well. recomendations for a diesel?
I would suggest Mobil 1 synthetic. Walmart has it on sale at times. And it is rated for Diesel--if I remember correctly. I have been using it for over 20 years and it keeps the engine clean inside and the oil pressure builds up faster during cold starts. I also used it in my motorcycles.
Phoneman, the louvers have two large tabs (screw tabs that hold the assemby in place) on top and two on the bottom, I don't see how anyone could insert them from the front with-out cutting those off. Well I'll be out there today messing with it and maybe the assembly I bought comes in two peices...I'll see thanks for the info. I'll have to also check out that oil, with 218K miles on this baby I want to make sure I have good stuff in it.Thanks
Just get a butter knife and place it between the louver assembly and the opening and tug slightly on the louver assembly and it will release. Place knife either on the left side or the right side.
I have replaced all of mine on my 92-the originals were either blue or broken.
Phoneman I stand corrected, after you said what youi did I realized that you infact we correct. I didn't notice at first that it was a two peice assembly! here Ford didn't even know! Wow glad I saw your post, I was getting ready to rip out the whole dash. Thanks man, thats what this web site is all about!!!
