venting a bit

My neighbor across the street from me has a 65 F100 with a 390 in it. He's been having issues with the engine not wanting to run past 3000 rpm. So I told him that I would take a look at it to see what was going on. When I popped the hood I noticed that his flex fan was installed backwards. I swapped it around to the correct position and kept looking. His intake manifold had several pools of oil sitting on it between the intake runners. Looking closer I saw that the air filter was soaked with oil. That would explain why the engine didn't want to run past 3000 rpm. Then came the question why it's blowing so much oil out of the filler cap. I didn't feel right taking his money without figuring out why all the oil was being blown out. After removing 7 loose spark plugs and 1 tight one I did a compression check. I did fidn that the #7 plug grounding strap was bent over to the side and contacting the electrode. All but #5 and #7 have around 180 psi. #5 has 90 psi and #7 barely moved the pointer. I rotated the engine over until I could find the top of the piston. Too bad I had to keep rotating the engine, the piston doesn't have a top any longer. The only thing I can think of is that the piston top broke off and was chewed to bits resulting in the bad spark plug. Well a long story short, I was told to "do what ever you need to" to make it run. I searched for possible alternatives which include a full tear down and rebuild. I did find a donor truck with a 390 and automatic for $650. He wanted to convert to an auto. Now he wants to scrap the truck after he thought about it more. Personally I don't see why he wants to get rid of the truck. The swap will cost less then a rebuild or a buying a long block. I guess he is worried that he will own a junker he can't get rid of or is worried that the process will take too long/nickle and dime him to death.
