I own a 92 full size Bronco with about 100K miles. It has the 351 engine with a automatic transmission (over drive). I have owned the truck since it was new and have kept it stock. My mileage is an average of 10.5 MPG around town and about the same on the highway (it use to be a lot better). I feel that the gas/peddle response is not what it should be. I would really like to improve the gas mileage and performance(acceleration response). There are a lot of ideas out there about computer chips, ignition systems, side gapping spark plugs, exhaust systems, and K&N filters. I am looking for specific improvement examples and suggestion.
LAST EDITED ON 16-Dec-00 AT 00:10 AM (EST)[p]My 95 351 with 105000 miles still runs strong. I bought it new and installed a catback, K&N, platinum plugs and changed to Mobil One synthetic oil. The mods gave it better mid range power but not much else. It did help my highway gas mileage. I thought if the engine goes away I might drop in a high performance 351 factory crate motor like the one in the first lightning truck. I believe the easiest way to get a ton of performance is a supercharger. They cost about $3000 to 4000 installed. I'm not sure how the transfer case and other drivetrain components would hold up to all the extra power. To go faster always costs more $$$$.
besides the great suggestions offerred already by other pals here, i offer:
check out and or/clean/change the tps, iac, egr valve; clean the intake, etc
I don't think you can get more than 18 mpg on a hiway at a steady speed unless you have a tail wind. my 96 with the 5.0 won't get more than 16 mpg at 55 on a freeway at around 70 deg F.
the cat back and a hi flow cat converter is the most cost eff add on.
