WELL.. A guy`s gotta not be stupid, like 4000 rpm in reverse up a 45 degree shale hill. I`m that guy that wouldn`t admit he was stuck and then was stuck anyway with what will probably amount to a 1000 dollar repair bill, - when the 9 inch broke it subsequently snapped a front axle shaft then ruined a u-joint and ovaled the yokes on the unbroken side. I needed both inners, a u-joint and one outer.
I want to get it back on the road and see what else I can break.
Carnage once, and re-building with equal components means that you will be doing it again.
Bigger is better, and size does matter.
Heak I was thinking that you may even want to step it up to larger splines than 31, or dare I say,,,,,,1 ton????????

Point taken, BUT 30 year old shafts are considerably more brittle and/or fatigued than brand new replacements. It is estimated that with new metallurgical techniques, today`s basic replacements are 30% stronger than 70's era shafts.
However, that doesn`t mean I am not considering stronger replacement options, like chrome moly, then I can blow my driveshaft apart instead!
