I have a 97 Ford Explorer 4x4 V8 and the problem I am having with it is that the oil pressure will not stay up. When it is cold the pressure is about half way on the gauge but after a shot period of time it drops to 0 and starts making noise. What I'm wondering is how much of a pain is it to replace the oil pump and does the engine need to come out or can I just lift it up enough to remove the oil pan?
First the guage on the dash is just an idiot light, does not register actual pressure.
@>7psi it registers as normal, <=0
I have not been able to drop the pan without pulling the engine, I though once of dropping the front drive assembly and crossmember but that was too much work. The tapping indicates low/no oil pressure so dont be driving untill you find the problem.
If I was to go as far as pulling the engine, would be pulling a cple of caps to see the condition of the lower bearings, Good luck, Keep us informed.
