from what i understand my 89 c6 is a three speed trans and the tc does not lock...is it possible to add one that does or somehow add another gear?
No. Even if you could find a torque converter for a C6 that had a clutch in it, the transmission itself has no provisions to operate it. The torque converter clutch in most lockup applications is applied using a separate hydraulic circuit in the transmission. The C6 has no provisions for such.
Gear Vendors does have an add on overdrive unit that can be fitted in place of the tailshaft housing on a C6. http://www.gearvendors.com/
here is a link to my original problem https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...new-trans.html...i am thinking i am going to have to replace the trans so i thought maybe i could buy a new tc that locks up...does anyone make a tranny that can operate a locking clutch?
After reading the original thread, it appears that your C6 was slipping badly in first gear (thus the shudder). Disconnecting the modulator line would run the line pressure to max and reduce the slip somewhat but with the modulator disconnected, it won't shift until max rpm.
The only transmission I know of that would replace your C6 is the E4OD. Its a 4 speed OD transmission with locking torque converter. It is electronically controlled so you would have to change the wiring harness and PCM to one from an '89 with an E4OD. BTW, '89 was the first year for the E4OD.
thanks for the replies...as far as transplanting an e40d that is not going to happen...when i get home im going to drop the pan look for any chunks of metal and replace the trans...is it standard practice to change the tc while changing the trans? what would cause the bad slipping?
i think im going to change the flywheel bc the starter has chewed it up a bit
Its always a good idea to change the torque converter. Any debris that came out of the transmission goes right through the torque converter. Its false economy to NOT change it.
Slipping could be cause by any number of things. A bad seal on the low gear drum, a loss of pressure from the pump (the pump is failing), a cross leak in the valve body, a leaking or sticking valve in the valve body, a broken pressure plate in the low drum, worn bushings....
And i might add worn clutches. The C6 is easy to overhaul as the kit comes with detailed instructions. But as I believe ya also have a broken shifting actuator in the valve body (that won't show in the pan) ya would need to repair or replace it as well. Most kits don't come with a converter or valve body or pump unless ya order them also. In your case I would use yours for a core at Napa for a rebuilt one with converter.
