i started noticing a shudder when braking, i had the tires rotated thinking this was the problem due to the uneven tread wear on the front tires. the shudder still exist, i'm leaving for myrtle beach in a week. it's not really bad but it is noticeable. i thought it may be a warped rotor, but then i thought i read here that it is almost impossible to warp a rotor?? any ideas? i do feel it in the front, and everything is smooth while driving.
I just did this on my wifes Corvette. The pedal pulsates on stopping . I pulled the front wheels, Used a small stiff wire brush in a drill motor. I hit the backside of the wheel in the area of the bolt holes for the lug . I remove the rust build-up from this area . I do the same on the mounting area of the wheel. Then I rotate the rotor & sand off the sewpt area with sandpaper.
You can feel the build up of brake material on the rotor,it leaves black smudges . Do both sides ,then I mount the wheel & step torque the nuts. If the brake pad shows uneven wear I replace them.
I had to have my rotors resurfaced. The pulsating steering wheel when stopping was rather annoying...most refer to this as a warped rotor...the more I read about this topic both here and other sites...I think I have been convinced that it isn't so much the actual rotor warps as it is impregnated with molten pad material creating "bumps" or a "rough" surface on the rotor that one feels?
expositions solution basically validates that theory with his "cleaning" method above...much less invasive than a re-surface (i.e. TURN)...I have been toying with swapping the pads to go to something a little harder (not ceramic) to help reduce the "chance" of shedding pad material onto the rotor surface...but for me the dealership turned all 4 under warranty as this is a "common" and "known" issue with the SD's brakes which the Ex's share.
I had that problem also, very annoying. I replaced the rotors and pads since I was at 90,000 miles. I think the dealer that sold it to me threw on new pads and didnt turn the rotors.
i did a search on this but i can't remember the members name that said it was impossible to warp a rotor, but i know i read it at least twice here, anyway i spoke to my mechanic and he did mention that there could be some residue from the pads built up on the rotors, going to try a couple hard stops first to try to clean them up, other than that i guess resurfacing will be the next thing. i don't feel it in the peddle the front of the truck seems like its bouncing when braking around 40-50mph.
I read the info on the link about warpped rotors Whew! Alot of info. I wonder if these guys have ever owned an X. I too own a 02 7.3 4x4 Limited X. I bought the truck brand knew in 02. At about 15,000 I began to feel all of the symptoms of (Warpped rotors Syndrome). So I had the brakes done, rotors resurfaced etc. At 30-35,000 same thing so I had them done agian. All of the same symtoms, apply the brakes and yah get ths shakes. Well after doing some research I opted to try the Power Slots w/Hawk Pads. WOW!!! Huge difference. Much better across the board. I just took the X too the brake shop to have the brakes inspected on 04-27-07, 3-1/2 years and 54,000 miles later.. The FT brakes still had 60% left on the pads and the rear had 35% left on them. So I went ahead and had the rear brakes done.(The RR has the stock rotors, w/ Hawk Pads) .And I still got 54,000 out of them!! I didn't feel the need to do (P/S rotors in the rear since at every brake service interval the stock rotors seem to be ok. Just added the Hawk pads as an upgrade. The FT has P/S rotors and Hawk Pads. I also own an 99 F-250 4x4 as well and I tow between 10,000 & 13,000 lbs on occasion with. I did the same to my truck 3-yrs ago and the brakes are still fine. These brakes are an excellent upgrade to the Ford trucks. Even more so if you tow a trailer. I hope this help.. Take care! Country
