The engine is loose and the guy told a friend of mine that he took it out of an old cop car. We will be looking at it in about a week. Even if its not an interceptor, the price is fair and I will probably pick it up anyways.
Morris, Rob did some internet digging and got me a whack of block, head, and intake casting numbers. Once i get it I might get your books and who knows, with some persuasion, might get your expertise out to the farm to look her over.
We did quite a bit of homework. It sounds like that thing made some good power - Ford rated hp @ 345-360 and torque around 460. Some articles said hp closer to 400. They rated the CJ and SCJ at 335 hp and 440 ft lbs.
One interesting tidbit - the aluminum intake shaves 55 pounds off the engine vs the cast one and is identical to the CJ as far as flow is concerned.
Ford under rated these engines to gain an advantage in the factory stock classes..
One good thing I hung on to all these years was a 68 Shelby aluminum manifold that`s on my 67 Fastback saving me those 55 lbs....
Those FE engines are pretty heavy. The 428 numbers I saw were 610 for cast intake and 550 or 560 for aluminum. Any idea where a 351 would come in for weight (not sure whats all included when they did those weigh ins)?
Aluminum heads are avialable for the FE series but I have no idea of the cost. The 429 aluminum heads are around $2,000 a set I believe.
An all alluminum FE 427 was/is avialable from Shelby, don`t ask the price.....
From mid 1968 thru 1970+ the 428 CJ Mustangs owed most drag strip records in it`s classes.
We were lucky enough to have a 428 67 Fairlane racing at SIR thouygh I had to work Sundays and never got to see it. One day it rolled while out on the track and was gone forever....
a way to get a rough ideo is to take a spark plug out and stick a dowl inside and get a rough idea of the stroke. not perfect, but fairly accurate, as some block numbers on FE's were repeated i believe. if it is an aluminum intake, and it looks like an original intake, that points to it being diffrent than a regular FE.
