So there is a chance that I may be getting a 360 out of a 1974 F-250 I think it is. Its free if I buy the bed from the truck, and the bed is 100 bucks, so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go ahead and pick it up. I was wondering if parts from all the other FE engines would interchange with it, and how they are on performance. From what I have read they are pretty low compression engines are they not? Is this because they have large combustion chamber heads, or do they have dished pistons? Both? Any and all information will be greatly appreciated!
Hey Titantis, I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject as I am a VW transplant. But from what I understand, the 360 & 390 FE motors are the same except for the crank, rod, and pistons. There is just a lil longer stroke on the 390. The Haynes manual shows a 3.50 stroke on the 360 and a 3.78 stroke on the 390. Both have a 4.05 bore. As far as the compression issue goes I'm not sure since I'm new to the whole V6 & V8 scene. Sorry I wasn't more help but I saw that no one else had posted a reply yet and just thought I'd try and help how I could. Laters
Yeah you have to work at it to get the compression up and the 360's came with a 2 barrel carburetor so it -can- be a dog. One way to "spot" a 390 is if it's got a 4 barrel intake manifold. Of course you still don't know what you've got until you measure the stroke tho.
There's things that can be done to wake them 360's up.
Just a while back there was a whole thread on just that. :)
705 are you a ramva transplant by any chance? :)
I've never rebuilt a V8 only VW and motorcycle engines.
I'm on the look out for a 390 with a 2 barrel intake manifold. :)
I have a 360 in a 76 f150 2wd. I bored it .040 a few years back, put on flowmaster dumped duals, and holley/wieand intake, edelbrock 600, and an rv cam ( one step up). It certainly has more power but I have two questions:
1. is there a better carb set up for this truck than what I currently have on it?
2. what can I do to wake it up even more without spending a ton of money.
I have a four speed granny gear tranny in it. Should I consider looking for a different tranny? I love the granny gear but it is not exactly condisive to speed.
