John, you may be a good candidate to go to an alternator since you don't have a generator to begin with. (Same starter)
The 6v regulator # I do not have, but the last one I bought at NAPA I just asked for one to fit my car and viola there it was with the screws on the cover. The regulator is not solid state. It is 40s/50's technology that works withs metal contacts controlled by coils. The manual will show which of the three arms to adjust by bending slightly to get the voltage cut in and the voltage cut out that you need. The unit is affected by the temp in your engine compartment, so you adjust it after you have got the engine bay up to normal operating conditions. Jag
I called NAPA. They want $62 for a 6v regulator for my 49' F2. Thats a far stretch from $20. Must have been a while ago. Umm, tough choice. I know I will not go with an alternator. Generator, yes. 12 or 6 is the question.
I have a functional 6v generator for a flat V8, it will cost more to ship to whereever you are than it is likely worth. It was cleaned up and put out well.
I think Auto Zone reg's are about $40 and are made in either Mexico or China. I still have my old 6v reg if you want to mess around that it. It isn't fried, just needs adjusting. If you are interested in the pair of them I'll make you a "smokin' deal".... NO warranty!!!
far from a 6v expert here, but....... couple of things i have seen done, not sure where the pieces came from.
one was a 6v internal regulator alternator........seen that one in a model "A"
nuther' was 8 volt battery, seen it on a few cars now, apperantly you tweak the reg. somehow or other and it'll charge 8 volts apperantly just nuff' x-tra juice to make the lights , starting, spark, & etc wayyyy better, and yet not nuff' voltage to harm any of these components.
juss, sompthin' to think about.

I ran an 8V for a while, but, could never get the reg set to charge enough. Went back to the 6. Friend with a 49 Ford Car has run an 8V for years. Had a shop set the reg up.
I get mine at the Tractor Supply, its an Agriculture Battery, with 925 Cranking Amps.
They fit the Ford Battery Tray real good, and if it will work on a Farm Tractor, no reason it won't work on your Truck.
I have bought several of these batteries from the same place, not for the same Truck, but for all the 6 Volt vehicles that I have owned over the years, these are real good quality.
Here is the run down on the Battery I use, its Product #905 Series 4200 Rateing is 940 Cranking Amps.
Dimensions are Length 10 inches, Width 6 3/4 inches, Height 8 inches.
I buy these at TSC, never had a problem yet used them in quite a few Trucks, Cars and in my 8N Ford Tractor.
I make up my own battery cables useing 0/1 guage Welding Cable, and Soldered Terminals. Keep the contacts clean and tight and they work like their supposed to, after all they were used years ago and started in sub Zero conditions, why wouldn't they work in an ideal climate.
Check the draw on your starter if the amp draw is to high then repair the starter. How often do you really repair one.
Another nice thing with regards to a Generator, is if your battery goes Flat on you the Gen will produce enough juice to get you home or nearby shelter if needed.
