Why

I put a new optima yellow top in & a new alternator. I went on a 600 mile trip & then parked the truck for 5 days. I went out to start it & the batt was dead. The batt charger I had wouldnt charge the batt. I took it to the store to make sure the batt was good. The guy said that there machine told them it was good so they ran the test again & it said bad, then again & it said good. So the guy says its good. I put it in my truck & I hear a relay click on & with my wifes help (she touched the positive side of the batt cable to the batt in an on off sequence) I find this relay powering the round fuel switching valve or whatever it is under the driver seat attatched to the frame. I started the truck & move it & when & turned the key off & back on it went back to the relay then fuel thing the way its supposed to be. I wonder if the ignition cylinder is bad. Is this possible, or is it a short somewhere, or is it something else? Thanks.

I have no idea what a “optima yellow top” is but the “round fuel switching valve” is the High Pressure Fuel Pump. If you have two tanks then fuel-switching valve is non-electrical with no wires going to it.
If a battery charger will not charge a battery out of the truck then the charger or battery is bad.

The battery/alternator testers at automotive parts stores are junk, do not trust them.
Get a multimeter. With the motor off the battery should read 12v minumum. If it doesn't it's bad or flat. With the motor running the voltage should read 13.5-14v, if it doesn't the alternator is bad.

Optima is the name of the battery. The tops of the batteries are either yellow, blue, red, or black (I think?). It confused me a bit also, then I realized what he was talking about.

I have worked in a lot of service stations and auto repair shops in the last forty years but I have never heard of a “optima”.
Who sells them?
Must be a West or East Coast battery company.

i thought everyone knew the optima batteries. if i'm not mistaken they were the first spiral cell batteries that can be mounted in any position, even upside down. isn't the yellow top the deep cycle battery?? that could be your problem, i'd get the red top one.

Yellow is the deep cycle. Red is the normal one. Blue is the marine one. The yellow one I have is nothing unordinary just a deep cycle so I can run winches & off road lights & radios. It should charge just like a normal battery. If anything it just makes it harder on the alternator constantly charging a run down batt. I would like to know what the prob is with the fuel pump coming on before the key is in? It doesnt do it all the time though.Thanks. Todd

i would say definately a short somewhere. could be in the ignition but not likely unless other stuff comes on also. does it come on when you put the key in without turning it?? or will the pump come on by itself at any time?? if you have a wiring diagram it should be simple to follow and find. is it just one pump that does it or will both come on all by itself??

I meant to comment on this earlier but forgot. LOL. I thought the fuel pumps were in the tanks. If so then what is the round thing on the DS frame rail. It definately has power going to it. To everyone. I'm still trying to find time to get to it. That & it wont quit raining. Update on the optima. I took it back yesterday cause after being on the charger for 2 days & not charging it only read 7 volts. I got my money back & the guy said that was the 4th optima that week that was bad. Real Frickin Nice I said. He wanted to give me another one instead of my money & I said see this hand, I will choke you with it if I dont get my money back. He instinctivly handed me some money. LOL. I love kids till there teenagers.
