Talking Odd bolt question

I'm trying to mount my receiver hitch and I went to the hardware store to buy some bolts. Well the best grade they had was 8.8. Any body know if this will be strong enough or should I order stronger bolts on-line? If these are strong enough then I can just go ahead and put it on otherwise I'll have to wait for the shipping for the ones on-line. Thanks guys

8.8 Grade metric bolts are a little tougher than a grade 5 SAE bolt.
85,000 psi vs 74,000 psi Proof load.

10.9 Grade metric bolts are equal to Grade 8 SAE bolts.
120,000 psi Proof Load.

IMO I would use the stronger bolts for a hitch.

You might want to try a RV center or a place that sells hitches. They both should carry the proper nuts and bolts for your project.

Talking Thats what I thought

I was thinking the same thing but I wouldn't want an accident with my load breaking off. I sure wish it was that easy. This isn't a hitch for your old grandma's station wagon.

Its not really the size I'm having the problem with. Its the grade my local hardware store only carries 8.8 thats in both standard and metric. Changeing to the standard wouldn't change the strength issue.

Casey, find a tractor dealer/shop or a big truck shop or a shop that sell or works on heavey equipment (dozers, backhoes, etc.). They should carry the grade 10.9 metric, since your in Germany.

Talking No harm No foul

No worries. I was just looking for ideas any how. I did end up putting it togather with the grade eights. I think that will hold until I make it back to the states or just order them on-line. Aside from that I too 'am from Utah originally, and I remember having five different hardware stores within thirty miles of my house. Sure do miss those luxeries.
