Spell Check

My spelling abilities are poor or almost non-existent - I didn't post at times because I was afraid I would look dumb. You ever notice how the meaning of your post can get lost if the spelling is poor? Some people never understand that a Master Mechanic may have something important to say, but can lack typing and spelling skills.

When it became necessary for me to post more, I used to write my posts in Word, spell check them, and then retype them into the submission box. For the last year I have been using add on spell checkers from Yahoo and Goggle that will check the spelling on entries you make to a web page.

They work - but take up space on your desktop, and they expose you to all the marketing from Goggle and Yahoo.

Another chapter leader suggested I try ieSpell - a free program that is a add-on to Internet Explorer. I have used it the last few days and just love the way it works. It works very much like the spell checker in Word, will even suggest replacement words. It takes up no space on your desktop, and does not force you to use Goggle or Yahoo as your search engine.

I am running XP pro and IE7.

You can get this program at http://www.iespell.com/ - and there are directions there also. email me if you run into trouble.

IE sucks. Use firefox instead. Version 2.0 has a built-in spell check, tabbed browsing (meaning you have lots of pages open but only one window), and the ability to install extensions. I have one that blocks all ads from websites, and one that gives me current weather forecasts and conditions.

Andy, someday (maybe at the next meet), me an you can study Dan's mastery of the stringed instruments, and you can teach me what in the heck you're talking about with all this computer mumbo jumbo...
I have no idea what an extension is.
Anyhow, I'll do a search on Firefox and see if I can figure it out in the meantime.

I wish FTE had a spell check feature. Sometimes I get a little hung up on a word or two, and just change the entire verbage of the post to avoid a mispelled word. In fact, you might find a few on this post, but who's counting, eh?

But then again, who cares. It's all family here... Gotta love this place, FTE.

I did technical writing for several years, before that validation and verification of electronic products. Every body hates Microsoft - but their stuff works with few surprises.

Give me Intel processors and MS software - some other products do better at specific tasks, but all the major software is written and tested on those platforms. There is a reason why they have 90+% of the market.

However, each his own, and firefox has good reviews.

I use Opera and the latest version has a spell checker extension, but I haven't tried it yet. I mostly use a little online spellchecker called WordWeb, where I simply highlight and copy a word that I'm unsure of the spelling on and then click on the WordWeb icon in my taskbar. A little window opens up and tells me the definition if the word is spelled correctly, or suggests an alternitive if I'm only off by a little bit. But if I'm way off then it doesn't quite know what to do and I have to try another spelling till I get close.

It's certainly not the best alternative, but for me it's pretty quick and easy, and works well most of the time.

IE got a bad rep for quite a while becaus of all its' security holes. They're constantly coming up with fixes for it, but for many of us, the damage is already done. I won't use it either. Opera and Firefox work well for me, and occasionally I'll use Mozilla.

Well, you are correct in that Microsoft has a lot of security issues - but think, if you were going to write a virus to prove how good you are, would you write one for a product that only has 2% of the market, or go after the big dog?

But I sold my Microsoft stock, and think people ought to find the programs best suited for their use. I have Mozilla Firefox as I was told that it would work with FTE's chat room, but I had no better luck with it. Maybe I should have tried it for a bit longer.
