brake booster problem

i have a 78 f250 that has horrible brakes. i made sure that all the shoes were adjusted right. the only time that i have brakes is if i pump the pedal 2 or 3 times and then the brakes are right there. other than that the first pump does nothing. also when i shut the truck off i can hear an air leak around the booster for about 3 or 4 seconds. is it possible to rebuild the booster or would it be easier to try and find something at the junk yard.

If it were me, I would get a new/rebuilt one from auto part store. Is the vacuum line good going to the booster?

If you vacuum line is good to the booster do this. With your foot on the brake pedal...start the engine. If the pedal sinks a bit your booster is probably ok. If you have to pump the brakes, I would suspect the master cylinder. By the way, if you do decide to replace the booster, most auto parts stores require you to replace the master also for warranty purposes.

i'll try the pedal thing when i start it.

also after i drive for a while and used the bakes hard i can see where brake fluid has been squirted around the mastercylinder cover and dripping down the side.
could this be where the leak is

Sounds like your master cylinder is toast. It could also be leaking into the booster and will eat the diaphram.
