Last night, I get a call around 12:00 a.m. last night, its my friend college friend Awkshay, i guess he just bought a new civic si with only a 160 horsepower, mod exhaust, thats it, just a 2.0L weighing 2000 lbs, myself driving a 96 ford ranger, filter, exhaust, typical mods, 2.3L manual. ANyways WE Decide to race down this straight away on campus, I get burnt, then I think to myself and tell him, aaaw you just got a better start, so we go around campus roasting our tires and then we take it on an off-campus straight away, we both get good starts, thinking I had him in first gear he tells me after the race that he slowed down because he thought I had another bad start and he smokes me. I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF POWER TO REDEEM MYSELF. Ford trucks i need your help, any suggestions to make to the old ranger. ill post some pics soon of it http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...7/DSC00196.jpg http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...7/DSC00195.jpg http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...7/DSC00193.jpg
Well, wanna race - you need a bigger engine. Honda Engine is DOHC, made for cars, not for Trucks. Engines of trucks are slower, but may run under the hight load and have long life. I have 4.0 SOHC Ranger and 3.0 overbore to 3.4 (not sure) Aero with st. tranny. They are fast.
You also need to race within your class, which means truck vs. truck with same size. Small Cars are usually equipped with street gears and front wheel drive which will boost them right off the line.
Yeah.... A 4-cylinder Ranger is not a very fast truck, and won't be, short of forced induction or an engine swap. And unless you regeared it or got lucky (like I did) and wound up with 4.10 gears from the factory, those oversize wheels and tires aren't doing you any favors, either.
Not to mention that street racing is dumb, and college campuses tend to have a disproportionate number of cops on them, because us college students tend to do dumb stuff...
Also the Honda SI is a quick little car. I test drove one of the new SI's back in 03 or 04 and was supprised. Yes it only has 160 or 170hp but as stated its geared for speed and quickness where the ranger, or any other truck, is geared for grunt power and torque.
Most Fords also, car or truck, make there power in the low RPM range where the Honda's make it near the top end of the RPM range. Even the focus has its top HP at 5500 RMP's(torque peak is 4500RPM) where as the Honds, I'm kinda guessing here, has top HP at 6000-6500 RPM.
and as a note I have taken a 2.3L Focus 5 speed(geared for MPG from factory) and have out done full size trucks with v-8's at red lights and they were trying because as we all know they have to be in front of you at a lane drop off......
Some of the drag racers might chime in here, but I seem to recall the idea of handicapping. Some clubs have standard handicaps for stock setups so that even if you lose the drag race you can still win based on handicap. Sort of like in sailing and golf. Everybody above is right. Asking your Ranger to beat that little ricer is like asking a set of NASCAR Super National oval track engine internals to last 200k miles. They'll hold up great in a 500 mi race, but they're not designed to hold up to the day to day, year after year torture test we all put our daily drivers through.
If you want, you can approach someone like Edlebrock Performance and ask them for the best streetable setup for your 2.3 and you'll give your ricer buddy a run for his money, but then he'll complain that it's not stock. There's a thread buried out there somewhere that talks about a Volvo head swap for the 2.3. It's a bolton, but the mods to get her set up are a bit extensive. From what I've read, those heads flow like mad, and would blast that ricer right off the road.
It's going to take a LOT to beat the car that weighs half as much as your truck and has 50 more horsepower. I'm talking engine swaps, etc. You're at a huge disadvantage to begin with. You'll be a couple of grand in the hole before you can outrun his stock car, sadly.
plus they redline around 8500-9000 or at least they used to, and love to go to it.
dont feel to bad, i wouldnt have even tried with a 2.3 against it. plus its there best civic model it should move a little quicker than a non si, which cant get out of its own way.
