I think I know the answer to my question already, but I just want to check...
'88 was the first year the roller 302 block was used in the trucks, and 85 was the first year for the cars....
I have an '86 F-150 EFI and it wont stay running so I was thinking about using it to build an engine for my '82 Mustang GT before I realized it may not be roller....
I do have an 82 or 84 302 carb that I'm going to drop in the '86....
First rollers in trucks was 92. But the earlier trucks starting with 86 can have a roller block. Some of these have the lifter valley bosses for the retainer spyder drilled and tapped, some don't. I have one that has the bosses fully formed, drilled & tapped and another that has the bosses sort of halfway formed. They're maybe half the diameter of the fully formed bosses. One block is an 88, the other an 89.
Ford went to roller blocks in the Crown Vic's/Mercury Marquis's
in 1987. Those should be real easy to find. I didn't know Ford
\waited until 1992 for the trucks to get rollers. Interesting! I
know you can pick up Crowns/Marquis at the local impound
auction for anywhere from $50 to $300.
The casting numbers will tell you if it's a roller block, but as I posted about the lifter valley bosses, only removing the intake will tell you that. Roller block casting numbers are on the driver's side lower rear of the block. E6SE, E7TE, F1SE are three such.
Say it is a roller but the bosses aren't machined cleanly... is there any point of cleaning the bosses... or is it better in my interest to just find one thats roller capable through and through?
Aside from that block I have with it's too small bosses (I guess, they're barely big enough to drill 1/4" holes in them) it's no big deal to drill and tap the bosses, just watch how far down you go, the cam bearings aren't real far below them. Easier to drill em than hunt down another block. One other thing I've learned the hard way with these blocks is to watch how you handle them and the rear main cap, it's REAL easy to break the arch in the cap in the top of the seal area. My 331 was broekn and we welded the piece back on. And then I went and broke another, one of the two blocks I mentioned above.
