I have a 351m stock in my 1979 f 250 truck. it was sitting for 3 years not being run. i changed the oil and gas in it before i started it, also i put new spark plugs in it. i started it up and it dident idle properly but it could reve up and stay reving till i stoped it. Now its ideling properly but when i try to rev it up it wants to quit and you have to pump the peddle for it to rev up a little, but when you do that some times it sounds like a back fire coming out of the carb . i checked the carb and there was black marks on it, eaven after i cleaned it, could any one pease help me

The carb may need to be cleaned out. Fuel filters may need changed. You can find more info about that in the carb forum. The backfiring may have blown the power valve also.
All old Ford engines have a problem with the OEM timing chain set wearing out. The OEM unit had a nylon covered gear that can fail anytime after about 80K miles. There is a process in your service manual for checking the chain slack. If in doubt replace the timing set with an aftermarket roller chain setup with multiple keyways. Set the new unit at "0". Do not just go to the parts store and buy an OEM replacement chain. They are retarded 4° for emissions. More information can be found in the 335 series engine forum.
I agree on the dirty carb, but also check the EGR, it could get stuck partially open with a piece of carbon that has worked loose from the exhaust passages. If it's stuck open it will never run right.
