I just bought my 2005 Ranger XLT a few weeks ago and I am looking into buying a bed cover for it. My salesman at the dealership recommended a local detailing shop, and the guy there recommended one called a "Fold-a-Cover." Are any of you familiar with this cover? Are there any other covers you recommend looking at? I don't particularly want one of the big fiberglass toppers because I want something that I can remove relatively easily, but I also want something that is fairly durable. Thanks.
I have also been thinking about one of those hard tri-folding covers. I wanted one of the folding covers that were soft, with aluminum rails built in. I decided not to get it because I was told they were flimsy and not the best quality.
The hard shelled tri-folding covers are pretty new, and they look to be a lot stonger. They are a bit pricy though, around 350 to 400 if memory serves. However, they are supposed to go on in ten minutes or so, and are easily removed if need be.
About any aftermarket company will be able to get you one. If you get it, let me know if the thing is worth it.
A buddy I work with has the hard folding type, but it's on a full size truck. Still works ok, but leaks. It's about 8 yrs old after all. It's the hinges. I've been envious of the fiberglass covers with the strongarm cylinders. Easy off too. No seams to leak and seemingly rugged.
I needed something that I could get completely out of the way when needed, so I bought a soft, roll-up tonneau - it works great for what I need. Mine is the Lund brand, but several others are virtually the same.
I had an Undercover on my '07 and mm '98. It is a full length cover, but it only weighs around 50lbs. It was very easy to get on and off. I liked it because it was strong and sturdy enough that you could get on it and jump up and down. It might be a little more than what you are looking for, but it is the one I recommend...
The hinges would be a problem with the folding types. I've seen them with rubber that covers the hinge. I'm sure that works fine, till it dry rots after a year or two. My fiberglass tonno leaks in the front corners. Thats a summer project that'll get fixed tho. The frame in the front of the bed sits up some how and the corners arent allowed to seat and make the seal. Any cover is vulnerable to leaks, they have opening/moving parts after all.
If you consider a soft cover DONT get one with the snaps. Those are the culprit of any rip or crack that ever develops. Extang and a few others have one that hooks with a J channel like a Jeep Wrangler soft top.
I'd go ahead with the tri fold if you can find one at the right price. You can always stick a piece of 3M foam tape under the hinge to seal it back off after the rubber covering rots away.
If you're looking for a tonneau cover consider the Truxedo line of covers. They are a soft rollup with a lifetime warranty. You can check out our web site for more information on the covers. http://www.truxedo.com/index.html

I also have an Undercover, and can't recommend it enough!
