I just purchased a 95 F150 XLT 5.0 Auto. I ran the engine codes and got two. Code 73 and 172. I changed the TPS. While at it I changed the wires and Coil as there was a misfire at the coil wire. I disconnected the battery then drove truck. Now it runs great but still have code 172, the O2 senser(lean).
Question, Can i just change out the O2 senser or could there be(other than the TPS) another reason it tripped.
some people have sort of said that the EGR might be letting too much exhaust into the system, making it run lean. Some people have put in an EGR restrictor plate to change the volume of air going into the EGR.
But, if you have a haynes or chilton's manual, I think they tell how to check the O2 sensor to make sure it's accurate, and not bad. It probably requires a voltmeter to check.
So, follow the manual procedure to check the o2 sensor first. I don't know how much they cost on our trucks, but I have seen some pretty expensive ones for other cars.
