E40D Question

OK Guy's, I have a 1993 F250 7.3 non turbo ext cab with E4OD Auto.I recently started having shifting problems .First thing is my overdrive indicator light does not work, checked all fuses, all good.how do you replace the lght ? second, when cold the truck shifts fine, when hot the trans will not shift into third or o.d.,not sure which. It comes up near the yellow on tach at 55 mph.after about 3 0r 4 miles it eventually shifts and the tach comes down to normal around 2400 in o.d..then everything is fine until you stop and then the cycle repeats itself. tach and speedo works fine and the previous owner had trans rebuilt, truck has 189,000 miles and 4.10 rear. I read somthing about the vss and flip sensors on a search here but did'nt know where to start. fluid is a good clean red color and i am at the moment changing the fluid and filter. had no crud on the magnet just the normal deposits as you find in gassers. my abs light came on yesterday for about 30 mins. i got no check engine lights and no flashing o.d. light. any help from you guru's would be greatly appreciated thanks, adam

Has your speedometer acted up al all? If so, I'll bet its a vss sensor (located near the top of the rear diff). Sensor on the injector pump lever could also cause this problem, but I suspect your 1-2 shift would also be abnormal if this were the case.

Is 189,000 miles on the whole truck, or just the trans?

Also, what exactly did you find in the pan? in paticular, how much material was on the magnet?

David85 thanks for the quick reply. If my speedo was acting irregular i never noticed it. but as for right now it is functioning fine. 189,000 is on whole truck. don't know at what mileage it was replaced but it has been cause it has one of those temp. tags attached to drivers side of pan to tell if someone overheats it for warranty.as for the amount of stuff on magnet it covered the magnet to where you could'nt see the hole int he middle of the magnet but had no no chunks or particles of any kind. One other thing is i noticed recently on two occasions at slow speed the truck will surge as if you blipped the throttle slightly. thanks for all your answers

OK, now when you say surging, does the truck lurch forward when it happens, or does the engine seem to neurtal out? Its not happening during a transmission shift is it?

Also, do you know when was the last time the fluid/filter were changed? I ask because the amount of sluge you decribe sounds a bit exesive.
