New to posting. 2004 F350 CC 4X4 LB with 38000 miles. While driving on the highway towing a 24ft enclosed trailer and encountering a slight incline the turbo starts to make popping noises. I have tried normal and tow haul mode with the same results. Just yesterday I noticed while driving around town when I stopped for a traffic light it sounded like the turbo stopped, lots of black smoke, hit accelerator pedal and it hesitated for a moment then took off. Any ideas or suggestions?
I have an '04 F350, CC, long box with 32,000 miles, and have been having issues with the turbo/EGR system since 14,000. It started happening occationally, but really got bad this past few months. I usually happens while hauling my camper and going up hills. I posted a similar question a couple of weeks ago, along with this video. Watch the video and see if this sounds like the noise your truck is making...it really starts to act up at the 1 min. mark. Just got a call from the dealer and they say they have replaced the turbo, I going in later today to pick it up. If you do a search on this forum you will find that many early 6.0 diesels (03 & 04) have the same problem, we are not alone, and Ford is well aware of the issues. Don't hessitate to take it to the dealer since the engine & turbo are still under warranty. And don't let them tell you "it's normal with all 6 liters", would you have bought the truck in the first place if it was doing it during the test drive? Here is the video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_531IQ9nRw
gpm414: You hit the nail on the head with that video. I have not had it drop as low as I saw in the video but neverless the same issue. I will say that the turbo was replaced once already for a different issue. The EGR has been unplugged since the last turbo replacement, based on what I have read on this forum. I guess it's time to put her in the shop.
gpm414,my 2004 is doing the exact same thing.the truck has 43,000 miles on it.the dealer said they were going to change the turbo. It has alredy been replaced at around 17,000 miles, for sticking issue.this was about 17 months ago.did replacing the turbo fix this problem and how many miles since the replacement.

I was just wandering if any of you with the 04 trucks run a boost gauge. I know that the 03 and 04 do not come with one. The turbo problem is something that is common with all these trucks and a boost gauge is a great way to see this problem coming on early on instead of it doing even more damage to your truck. When I say damage I mean dents in the hood from the blue hose blowing off, blowing head gaskets, the intercooler failing. Well anyways just a thought.
Hey i just hasd the same problems<<2004 f350 >> the first time they replaced the entire turbo, the veins were stuck open as well as the VGT next time 7 days later they replaced the EGR valve.I was so F ing mad because i noticed it when i test drove it they told me is was nothing, had a inspection done, had Ford replace what was req.Now no codes flash left the EGR connected, runs like it should......the only advice is if its still under warrenty tell the repair dept its not their nickle to fix it so get busy...............Paul
