I'm working on a -81 F150. It's got a 351M with a motorcraft 2150 and duraspark. Changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor and done a re-build on the carb. Searched high and low for vaccum leaks (found a few), plugged all sorts of hoses and got it to idle good without load. As soon as I put it in gear it starts running rough. I've checked all cylinders for mechanical issues and they are good so no problems there. I'm down to thinking it has to be something in the electrical. Any ideas? Also anyone knows if I can get rid of the smog pump? I'm in Texas and I've looked for info but can't really tell if I'm ok removing it or not. Any help on these issues would be much appreciated
have you checked the timing? retarded timing can cause a motor to run rough when put in gear or under load but it will idle perfectly.
Justin
Timing is perfect. That was my first thought too, but no such luck. So I'm down to electrical and don't know much about the duraspark system, or even Fords for that matter. Thank you so much for the suggestion though, I should have thought of mentioning that in my list of things I had done since your absolutely right about the retarded timing.
Next thing I'd try is testing/replacing the coil. If you can find the Ohm specs you can test one with an ohm meter, if not I'd just buy one to try for the $15 they cost.
A weak ignition system can do teh same thing, it'll idle fine until you try to load the motor up.
Something else I'd do is take my duraspark module in to be tested. Most autozone's and oreilly's can test them and will do it for free.
I'd try backing out the Idle Mixture Needle Valves about 1/8 to 1/4 turn to see if that helps. Sounds like idle mixture is too lean to support the "in gear" load.
Yes, set the idle and the idle mixture with it in gear. I usually put it in reverse and gently back it up against a tree and leave it in gear that way.
