My new to me 2002 F-250 Lariet ex.cab,sb, psd, 2wd, automatic tows great and runs great but I am feeling a slight bump or thump when I leave a stop light. Its more noticable when Im not towing. Almost feels like a brake caliper sticking as I had this happen on an old truck I had years ago. Just was looking for any input from other psd owners out there. Thanks in advance for any help! By the way truck has 76,000 miles , and has had new brakes within the past 10,000 miles.
Is it a thump or could it be a clunk? There have been many cases of driveline clunk here. Could it be the driveshaft clunking? Are you able to narrow down the source any?
i'm curious about this thread... my 02 does the same thing, almost like there's something out of alignment at take off. could the slip joint need re-greasing?
yeap sounds like the dreaded slip yoke clunk......easy fix is to drill the slip yoke and install a zerk (grease) fitting. every oil change give it one pump with the grease gun
Thanks for all the help. I'll give this a shot tomorrow. By the way this a great forum. I learn more reading here than any books can teach. Appreaciate the input.
I found this place after I bought a repair manual that stated "Due to the complexities of the diesel engine we wont get into it very far." I started reading here that day and have never looked back. FTE is quite the site with some of the most helpful people I have ever met. Your in the right place!

Great long term fix concept! Can you provide more details, perhaps a few pics for where to best install the fitting?

One year ago, i didnt know crap about this motor. I was brought up around gasoline motors my whole life. Now i know more about oil burners than any gasser lol.
i had the same problem and it was the u-joints. When I took the drive line down, I replaced the u-joints and carrier bearing and greased the slip yolk. While I was at it, I shimmed the carrier bearing as well. Every now and then it will start to do it again, but once I grease the u-joints, it goes away.
I never did get the drive line balanced, but that would be the last resort. Next time I take it down, I will put a zerk to grease the slip yolk.
ford sells a special grease to lube them with but would most likely be better to drill and tap yoke and grease with a good high impact grease
on class8 trucks everythng is bigger but same andthats the way we greased the for years and never had a problem if the were greased properly
Well i finally got time to pull the driveline and grease the spline and this took care of the clunk. I thought about drill and tap but was worried about this throwing the weight off. I dont know if this would throw it out of balance. Any thoughts? Thanks to all for the help.
