LAST EDITED ON 28-Mar-01 AT 01:46 AM (EST)[p]okay, I'm finally in a position to begin searching for what I really want: A Bronco. But I've got questions, so you guys will be hearing from me some in the coming months(planning to purchase late May), hopefully to out of this with a Bronco I'll be able to live with and enjoy. So on to the first question...

as far as transmisions go, what was offered from 1990-1996? mainly looking for automatics here. E4OD, AOD-E, AOD, others, anything to look out for, good or bad? transfer cases...good, bad, how to identify them externally...etc. I wanna get a 351, so I guess what my options are with this engine would be first priority...

Thanks a lot. I'll be around...

1989 F-150 : 5.0, shorty headers, Flowmaster cat-back, K&N filtercharger intake, March pulleys, "Multi-brand" performance ignition, soon to be Mass-Air...doesn't know she's not a Mustang

yo!
Look here for tranny info:
http://www.baumannengineering.com/e4odinf.htm

and:
http://www.off-road.com/ford/bigbroncos/faq.html#1991

"1987 ....The transfer case was replaced by a Borg-Warner 1356 with a 2.69 low range. 4.10 gearing was optional. Touch drive was first offered this year..."

oter things to look for (besides what you see on this forum's current page):
auto hubs worn out or not maintained
leaky transfer case, rad, tranny
u joints worn
radius arm bushings worn esp on pass side
typical engine leaks, noises, etc. etc.
rust!
tail gate window operation
rusted oil pan
saggy springs
bad lift installation

good luck!

From my experence don't get an 89 cause of the paint and the bad breaks.

90 im not sure. I know that the 91-96 is good. As far as the transmission i think its a E-40D for the 5.8 ltr automatics.

I have a 1995 Ford Eddie Bauer Bronco FULLY LOADED every option. It's a 5.8 ltr automatic w/ 91,000 miles on it runs strong. I have never had one problem with it. Its has never broken down. It gets 17 mpg on the free way and 15 in town. The only thing I don't like about it is that Ford weakend the suspention on the broncos a lot in the 90s. So if you hual anything your gonna need air bags unless its under 4,000 pounds.

Im in a hurry thats why..
