Well I read the article on how to change the fuel filter on an 2004 and newer truck and then searched for it for my truck with no results, and attempted it on my 1997 with no success. I am hoping someone in here can tell me where I went wrong.
I took the little round tool (sorry I do not know what it is called) slipped it on the front of the filter and pushed it into the fuel line while pushing the fuel line towards the filter, then away from the filter, and alternating how I was pushing the "tool." I tried moving these things in every direction possible. I tried spreading the "tool" apart to make it slide over the little nipple on the filter to get the line off.
If someone could describe how to use these little "tools" I would greatly appreciate it because I lost my self confidence being beaten by something described as so simple ha ha.
It should just slide inside the fitting to release the clips. Did you releave system pressure? Sometimes they are a booger to remove, just keep pushing, pulling and twisting.
I fit a screwdriver in there and pushed the tool into the fitting with that. I had no luck with the metal scissor type tool, plastic one worked for me.
I removed the pressure, I think, I had the truck idling and hit the switch, it popped, then the engine slowly died out and i tried to start it for a minute.
Yes this was the little plastic one in a kit from Advanced Auto Parts.
It felt like the tool would slide in until it hit that lip or nipple or what ever you want to call it on the filter our spout but then it wouldn't slide over it to release the fuel line. Does that make sense?
Once I took a big chisel and pried against the "tool" to try and force it even further into the fuel line but I was sort of scared I would break the "tool" so I did not do that too forcefully.
Are you sure you got the right size tool? I think that there are 2 diffrent sizes. If the filter has been on there for a long time, spray some penetrating oil in the line and let it sit for a while. They are tough to get off if they are stuck. Good Luck!!
I had it replaced around 40k miles ago. I bought the kit of tools and the 5/16 or 3/8 was the smallest I think? I don't know 6 came in the kit and the smallest one is what I have been using.
I started to spray some WD40 on it but I was scared a little might wind up in the fuel.
I used the gray plastic one in the kit from Advance. The article on the front page of this website has good pictures for the late model F150's. All the plastic tool is doing is speading the teeth holding the fuel filter onto the fuel line. Once it's in there good you should be able to pull the fuel line off with the plastic tool inside the fuel line.
Right yeah, I have read that article and studied the pictures a half dozen times lol. I had the fuel filter replaced by a shop before and it is shaped different than the one I got at advanced so I think this could have something to do with why I am having problems. Oh well till next weekend when there is time for the projects.
Lance it sounds like you have the same kit I bought from the local advance, the gray one is what I have been trying to use.
Thanks guys
i just changed mine a couple of weeks ago and it took a little wiggling and pushing and pulling cussing and a couple of beers and about 30 seconds it was a bitch but i kept messing with it and it finnaly came off
