Hey, I have a 1990 5.0 5-speed manual fullsize bronco with 145k. It seems to run great but when I drive in any gear and lift my foot off the accelerator there is slight "bump". Then when I press the pedal again the "bump" happens again. It feels almost as though something is disengaging...
Im thinking it could be transmission or clutch problems, but im hoping its something to do with a wearing of the drivetrain. I have heard broncos are notorious for clunking and bumping sounds as they get older.
I've got a '90 Bronco with the 5.8 and had the same "clunking" sound. Usually happened from a standing start and stopping. When I took it to a mechanic, he greased the drive shaft and the slip coupling and the "clunking" stopped.
Hi, i have an 89 and had the same clunking noise. It turned out to be the rear Universal joint on the drive shaft. Changed it and it's great now.
Good luck
Jamie
My '83 Bronco has the same problem, but it is more like a 'clunk' rather than a 'bump'. It is getting pretty bad. I bought new U-joints hoping to fix the problem but when I looked at the rear driveshaft they all seemed to be fine. I then turned the driveshaft and it was able to turn at least a 1/4 turn before it would either move the wheels or the transmission. I am almost positive it is caused by a bad rear end and loose transfer case chain. If I had to guess you probably just have a bad U-joint, but it could be the rear end. Does your truck have a small, rhythmic vibration while driving on the expressway? That probably means a bad rear end.
i agree with the first guy that answered you its probably the tranny mount if not then put it in neutral and check the ujoints. most all fords after they get a few mles on them have slop in the rear end.
good luck.
