Cool HELP! Transmission Problems

Hey,
I posted this in the FE forum, but did not get help. I need to get this fixed soon, so any information is greatly apprecated.

I just got my newly rebuilt engine installed and she fired right up. The problem I have now is the transmission makes a kind of rubbing/grinding noise when driven. It is a 4 speed NP435 attached to a 390. We removed the transmission and had it cleaned, put in a new clutch reinstalled with the engine. The transfer case for the 4wd works fine.

Any ideas about it? I appreciate any help.
Karl

A rubbing sond sonds like the clutch. Did you drain the gear oil to see if its gray or has metal flakes?

If the tranny is still out, shake the input shaft, see if the front bearings may be bad...could also be the throw out beaing, but assume you changed it with the clutch?

Does the noise change with a different gear, or always stay the same?

Make the noise with your foot in the clutch?

Does the noise change when you partially depress the clutch?

You did use a pilot tool to install the clutch and PP?

Last thing just thinking, did you guys put in the pilot bushing/bearing in the end of the crank? Or replace the old one if the shop left it in?

My brother put a new clutch in and used a pilot tool for it. He said the truck wont go into reverse and makes a grinding noise going forward. He said something about making sure some forks are lined up. He is going to take the top off again and look into it. I will forward all information to him

Thanks

Karl, I had an earlier post that some how got lost - sometimes FTE servers eat posts.

Anyway, it sure sounds like the shifter forks are out of position. The way I would try to fix it is to remove the shifter part of the case and use a punch or screwdriver to get the tranny into a gear I knew (reverse is best) and then position the shift lever to that gear.

I would then carefully mate the two together such that the shifting forks engaged, and slip a few bolts into the case to hold it in position. I would then start the engine and see how that worked.

Worse case is that the tranny will have to come out and be taken to your mechanic so he can install the forks.

Good Luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Clint,

Thanks. My brother speculates it is the shifter forks. I will forward this to you.

On the good side. They started up the 390 with just headers on it. Dang it is loud. I heard it over the phone. They are working on getting the carb set right now.

I will post pictures of the engine tomorrow (Saturday). I will give you a hint. Remember how I called it the Johnny Cash engine because of all the wierd parts? Well it is still the Johnny Cash engine, but for a new reason. I'll post tomorrow.
Thanks,
Karl
