Dealer $$$ question

Autozone= computer plug in. Code P0410. 2 mins Free

(I'm an average driver, so i thought i'd try and save some time by having the dealer fix this.) boy was i wrong. goin to have to work an extra week of my life to make up for this mistake.

Dealer= Computer plug in North Scottsdale Ford = $120.00 diag. + tax
Code P0410.

Dealer says: replace EGR. Pressure sensor. Vaccume lines. $880.00 + tax

Why do they insist on prices through the roof? the diag took 2 mins. that is $60.00 a minute
the 3 parts were 148.00 online.

I HATE DEALERS!!!!

This may or may not be the case in your situation, but going to Autozone and getting a code pulled does not equal diagnosis. All that accomplishes is telling you what area the problem is in so they can sell you whatever part is mentioned in the code description. To truly diagnose the problem usually takes some time. I don't see a 410 in the info here so I can't guess how much time it might take. If it was a 401 (did you transpose the 1 and 0?) it might take an hour to go through the hole process. I had an F-150 a week or two ago with a 401 that required quite a bit of time before I could even diagnose the problem. The vacuum tree behind the battery was completely rotted and falling apart, which meant there was no vacuum for the EGR valve. After backtracking that and fixing it so I could evaluate the rest of the system and clean the ports in the intake I probably did have at least 2 hours in it.

Dealers have bills to pay too. While I don't disagree that they charge more than an independent shop, nobody forced you to go see them. You could have just as easily invested a few thousand dollars in equipment and done it yourself.

FWIW, I looked up an EGR valve, DPFE, and the hoses and it would have cost you about $500 for us to do it. The dealer shouldn't have been that much higher. What else did they charge you for?

I would like to agree with the other poster on diagnosics needed to properly fix the code, but I don't see much diagnostics going on here. Looks like they just threw ALL the major parts related to the code at it. The possibility that the vacuum lines, EGR valve AND DPFE sensor were all bad is most likely remote.
IMHO this repair job was nothing more than just slinging parts at the problem.

This is a really good lesson as to why you need to :
1 Get a (good) code scanner and learn to use it
2. Learn what the codes mean and how to troubleshoot them (this site is a good place to start)
3. Find a reputable mechanic for those jobs you cannot or do not want to tackle, or require specialty tools you do not want to invest in.
