Hello...I am a new member with a 2000 F150 4x4, 4.2L V6, 5 speed with 117,000 miles. My engine has started to cut out or stutter whenever I accelerate. It idles and runs fine when the RPM's are low. I took it to the dealer and they could not find any error codes. Their best guess was that it needs a tune up with a new ignition coil, plug wires, and spark plugs. I have done a little research on the net and it turned up the same solution. Has anyone else experienced this?
If it is the ignition coil, plug wires, and spark plugs are those very difficult to change out yourself?
The other problem that I am having is with my System 6 alarm. I have triggered the alarm and I cannot find my book that tells me how to turn it off again. I have to use the emergency override every time I get in. Can anyone help me out with this?
There is more than one model of system 6 alarms.
Type into your browser 'system 6 auto alarms' and find the link that brings up the company site. They should have the book for down load.
If your truck has never had plugs and wires, it's a good place to start.
I would have changed them at 50,000 +/-.
You should clean the EGR, throttle body and the IAC all at the same time.
Even consider changing out the oxygen sensor.
Good luck.
Thanks Bluegrass. The truck had 92,000+ miles on it when I bought it so I am not sure if these are original or not. This is probably a dumb question, but what is the EGR and the IAC? Thanks again for your help.
IAC = Idle Air Control valve. It basically controls the idle of the truck, located on the intake, near the throttle body. They get gunked up with carbon and other yucky stuff. They can be disassembled and cleaned with carb cleaner and should work good as new.
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve. Recirculates exhasut gases back into the intake. Sometimes the valve inside gets stuck open or closed, not sure which. Am i close guys?
Thanks for the help guys. I changed the spark plugs and plug wires yesterday morning. The engine has not misfired since then so hopefully that took care of the problem.
I still have not been able to turn the alarm off though. I tried searching for System 6 Auto Alarm like Bluegrass recommended but I was not able to find the manufacturer's website. Any other help would be much appreciated.
Since the misfire is fixed, this wont be much help. Keep in mind that you need a fuel filter if you haven't had it changed. I always forget about that.
