I am driving my 73 F100, 360 2bbl, 4 spd 4x4 with aggressive maxxis mudder tires that are at stock dimensions. I tried to add an aftermarket electronic point conversoin kit but ended switching back. My old plugs were a light brown in color indicating the fuel mixture was close, I did add a K&N filter but it is in the factory breather. I am guessing that my gears are 3.50 to 1. I did install autolite platinum plugs and 32 oz. accel points and condensor. I know that if money was no object, that I could go with a fuel injected 302 or an overdrive set up.I am just trying to find a few simple tips that has worked for one of you. For example, some one once told me that shaving a few thousanths of an inch off the cylinder heads could really wake up an engine plus gain 3-4 mpg. But I never did find anyone that could back up that claim. At $3 per gallon here in Kansas,I am willing to try anything except selling my reliable gas gussler.
8 MPG? I'm getting 250miles from 15.4 gals last week or 16.2mpg and I have a cold exhaust leak. Now, around town with this heavy truck it's more like 11mpg. I do keep my foot out of it however. But with the torque of this motor I end up beating most people off the line anyways without any trouble.
I'm using the petronics ignitor module and have on many other cars with Autolite Plat Plugs. Burning cream color and I made sure the idle mixture is set 1/2 turn above where the motor runs rough.
Don't forget our motors run at 3 deg BTC not 6-8 deg like most truck. Big difference.
My dwell is a solid 30 all the way through the range.
Something is wrong. Have a good mechanic at an independent shop check it out. I got 12MPG in town from a F250 with a worn out 400. The 360 was never known for efficiency or mileage tho. One of the reasons the FE engines were discontinued.
