doesnt start when hot
i have a 90 f150 with a 5L an it doesnt start when its hot.
i finally got to take it out for a drive the other day and i shut it off in town to talk to a friend and it wouldnt restart. the next day after school i went out and it started right up. is there any definate answer to this or do i have to keep searching. also its really hard to track down the problem with it cold so i need my dad there to take it out to get it warmed up cause i only have my G2.
Also what would the aproxamate milage be on this truck.
thanks alot

#1 coil
#2 TFI Module
#3 Hall effect pickup in the distributer
Past experience and the school of hard knocks taught me these. The first 2 are easy fixes and not to bad on price. The 3rd is not bad on price but takes more time and the right gear puller to do it.

The mileage on each of our engines differs so much that it would be hard to tell you what your mileage is. You can calculate it yourself and compare to others though. Fill your truck up ALL THE WAY (top it off until its full) and take note of the odometer reading, then drive the tank down as far as you want (the more you drive the more accurate the number will be), then fill up again all the way (typically good to use same station and same pump) and then divide the number of miles you drove by the numer of gallons that you just pumped. Depending on the size of your truck and the way that you drive it (plus some other factors like gearing, tire size, etc.) you should expect to get anywhere from 13 to 19 mpg with the 302 for mixed driving conditions.

My 250 did the same thing for several years, not all the time. If it cooled for an hour or so it would go. The problem was the fuel pressure was bleeding down, and if the engine is hot, the pump would not come on, after the temp went down a bit the pump would come on. I determined this by shorting the fuel pump to ground (off the ECC1V test connector) and it fired immediately.

I had '91 5.0 that would not start and even stall out when hot. Turned out to be weak fuel pump in tank. Have you tried switching tanks (don't know if '90 has 3 fuel pumps or just in-tank). New fuel pump got pressure up and she fired up every time. Good luck.
the fuel pump sounds good because it cycles on and off in about 2 sec after i turn the key on.
i definatly know its a no spark isue though because it had no spark at all the first time it happened downtown. i went out today and warmed it right up and came home and it started fine today, no problem at all.
we did ajust the timing a bit, it was a little off, but is now good.
i was thinking it was the modular under the distributor, but i have to get it to where its screwing up again to start testing for the problem.
thanks for all the help, its my first truck, and learnin alot from it.
it also seem to backshift really hard when you let off, its automatic but when you let off it has a hard clunk, and backshifts rather than just coasting, would this be somones played with it before, a shift kit, or just bad wiring????
whoops, loged in under my dad.

That site will explain in detail how to pull the codes.
Return to the home page (fordfuelinjection.com) and click the links labeled Codes xx-xx to see what your codes pertain to. Or you can just buy a code reader for around $30 at the auto parts store; a smart and useful investment IMO.
