We need the approximate dimensions of the tank so we can figure out the surface area.

It's a 5 gallon tank from siege engineering on ebay. According to the description it's 11" x 11" x 21". How do the dimensions factor in? I thought a 5 gal is 5 gal regardless of shape.

An air horn is an air horn. They'll work down to about 65 or 70 psi. But, the more air you got, the louder they are. The way a rig works is the compressor cuts out at 120 psi, cuts back in at 80 psi. Then there's a high pressure relief at 150 psi so the tank is safe. Horns are air hogs though, if you ever hear a truck laying on it's horns, it's for a good reason (getting cut off). Otherwise, they usually only "toot" them for backing up, or saying hello.

If I were to put money on your setup, I'd say you'd run out of air in about 7 seconds.

in my line of work we use them to clear the roads. our engines have air brakes so it's a lot larger systems. our rescue's w/o air brakes also have air horns, but i haven't checked what size tanks/compressors they have. i do know they last longer than 7 seconds.

So the volume of the 5gal tank is roughly .77 cu. ft.

The engineering problem:

What size tank will it take to run 2 horns operating at 7cfm & 110psi via a regulator with the initial tank pressure at 150psi for 15 seconds. Output pressure can not drop below 110psi.

Here's what I've come up with using Boyle's law.

Code:

pa Va = pc Vc (1) where pa = atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi, 101.325 kPa) Va = volume of the gas at atmospheric pressure (cubic feet, cubic meter) pc = compressed pressure (psi, kPa) Vc = volume of the gas at compressed pressure (cubic feet, cubic meter)
5gal tank = .77 cuft

.77 cuft tank @ 150psi = 8.6 cuft
.77 cuft tank @ 110psi = 6.5 cuft

8.6 cuft - 6.5 cuft = 2.1 cuft

7cfm x 2 = 14cfm = .233 cuft/sec

2.1 cuft / .233 cuft/sec = 9 seconds

8.5gal tank = 1.32 cuft

1.32 cuft tank @ 150psi = 14.8 cuft
1.32 cuft tank @ 110psi = 11.2 cuft

14.8 cuft - 11.2 cuft = 3.6 cuft

7cfm x 2 = 14cfm = .233 cuft/sec

3.6 cuft / .233 cuft/sec = 15.4 seconds

Any thoughts?
