fuel gauge pegged

The gas gauge on my 87 Bronco is pegged (about 90 dgerees) way past the "full" mark. Is this a pooched sending unit, bad ground, or? What can I check prior to dropping the tank?

i had an instrument voltage regulator go bad and it caused my fuel gauge to peg high

mine was the same way i had to go to the dealer and buy a new fuel assembly for the tank, and it comes all in one piece, float screen, the works, it fixed mine.

Thanks for the replies.... Is there a way to test for a bad sending unit? or "instrument voltage regulator?"
