Last week I replaced my power steering pump since it appeared to be leaking vast amounts of fluid. All was good until yesterday when I hear that whinning noise coming from the pump again. Looked it over good and took it to a mechanic friend and he says it looks like the gear box is the culprit. Crap. I have to buy 2 boxes because you can't tell till you get them off if it is 32 or 36 spline. They each cost $170 and the core charge is $200 :O So a total of $740 of which I will get $570 back, but still...... Hope this will fix it for good..... Wish me luck.....
Did you bleed the air out of the system by removing the return line and putting it a bucket or jug and have a friend move the steering back and forth while pushing on the brake pedal, all while you are pouring fresh oil in to the pump while you idle the engine. The whin is usually cause by air bubbles.. This is a common problem.
Well this whinning is caused by lack of fluid. The eveidence was all over the ground under my truck. Guess I didn't say that in my first post. I got under the truck and there is fluid everywhere under the pump on the frame and on the gear box but none above the gear box.
Steve, if you got any fluid on your serpentine belt, you need to go ahead and get a new belt as well, but make sure to clean all the power steering fluid crap out of the grooves on every pulley you have. Otherwise, you're going to have a lot more squealing to come from the belt/pulley system. Brake cleaner and carb cleaner have both worked well for me on this job in the past.
I was lucky in the fact that all the ATF dripped from the bottom of the gear box right onto the front suspension and frame and then of course right onto the ground.
I just had this happen to me two weeks ago. The sector seal (spelling) went out and made a huge mess. I took it to a shop to have fixed. Not proud of it, but I just didn't have time to fix it. $450 gone.
Have any of you had a leaking hose going back to the master cylinder? I think I have a bad hose leak but can't really see one. With all the fluid everywhere you would think it would be quite obvious. If I need a hose can you get one at napa or is this a stealership item?
I had to replace my hose a couple of years ago. It was leaking a little at the pump, not enough to worry about. I just added alittle fluid every day or so. All was well until that hose blow right at the same place it barely had a drip at. It happened right in the middle of a turn. No power steering, no power brakes, very scary. What I'm trying to say is go ahead and change that hose BEFORE it blows instead of waiting like I did. I had to call my son to go to the Ford dealer and buy and bring one out to me. Road side repairs are never fun.

Now would be a good time to have the upgraded teering box installed. It is a stronger unit also. It is basically 06-up steering box. The steering box's are quite a bit more, about $560.00 but worth the cost. Especially if you've lifted your truck. Just a little Info,..Take Care All.. Country
Well I believe I found my problem. I unhooked the hose and found what looks to be a reminent of a white o-ring not sure. There was not much left. Any ideas about this and where to find one? While I have everyhting out I may just remove the foil on my intercooler tube.
