I pulled my 5er Toy Hauler for the first time Sunday. All on flat ground, some stop and go and more freeway. I never took my overdrive off and pulling was very easy.
Question: (this will sound stupid but I just got this truck) If I were to take the OD off would I get a display of Tow/Haul somewhere or just OD off?
You would get a display of "overdrive off: Should be done if you're towing anything heavy, or on any hills. The transmission won't shift itself to death.
If the truck is semi-new, and the tranny isn't shifting up and down, its fine to tow in overdrive.
If the truck is even newer than semi-new, and it says "tow/haul" rather than "overdrive off", you DO want it on. In this case its not just locking out 4th gear, its reprogramming shift points so that it delievers the power needed when its needed.
Sorry, it's a V10.
Shift points change when OD is off???
Do only Diesels have Tow/Haul???
Is there a difference between the transmissions that one model would have tow/haul mode and another not???

my brain is full, I need a beer......
Shift points do not change when OD is off. You can safely tow in OD if the transmission is not hunting excessively. If the transmission starts to hunt do to rolling terrain then turn OD off. When a transmission hunts it produces excess heat which will cook the tranny if you are not careful. On flat ground were the tranny is not hunting in OD then leave it in OD for better fuel mileage and you will have no ill effects on the tranny.
You do not have Tow/Haul in your truck because for this model year the "Torqushift with Tow/Haul was only available with the diesel engine. You have the standard 4-speed automatic Ford transmission that has been around for years.
Both gas and diesel engine have the tow haul mode.
This is incorrect. The Torqushift transmission with Tow/Haul was only availble with the 6.0 diesel engine until 2005. Starting with the 2005 model year SD, the Torqushift transmission became an available option with the V10.

I have a '97 with the 7.3-liter diesel and 4-speed auto tranny. As stated, unless your tranny is constantly shifting into and out of overdrive (hunting), you SHOULD be fine towing with overdrive on; UNLESS your owner's manual specifically says WHY you shouldn't tow with overdrive on.
If the terrain doesn't cause a lot of hunting, go for it.
to od or not to od!! i would turn od off when towing anything heavy those e40d and others are very expencive to rebuild i have seen this what does it hurt to spend more time rater than having your truck in a shop for at least a week with a dead trans.
Alright, assume it's an E4OD thats been freshly rebuilt/upgraded for towing/offroad use. Equipped with an oversized cooler, bigger transmission pan, temp gauge, and a shift kit. Normal rules apply I'm assuming? Run in OD unless transmission starts hunting for gears OR temp rises up on the gauge?
