I was wondering about block markings, or therefore the lack of markings. My block has the normal 352 on the front of the block, with a 29 imprinted above that. The passenger side of the block is completely bare, unless its down under the starter....but i can't see any numbers protruding from the block when i shine light down there. The other marking is the partial serial number on the back of the block, its AP*176373 and thats all that was back there. I wasn't able to see the date code, since the engine is sitting on a tire. The stroke was measured by the dowl in the spark plug hole, and it has a stroke of around 3 3/4 inch to a lil under a 4 inch, i might get more specific with it, and have a friend measure it to be exact, but it was over 3 3/4. I don't have access to the back of the block because the 3spd is still on it. Let me know what you think of the markings i've found, basically the 29 on hte front of the block and the serial number. Let me know what you think, or what to look for.
engine displacement and stroke
352 - 360 cid will have a 3.500 inch stroke
390 cid will have a 3.784 inch stroke
410 - 428 cid will have a 3.98 inch stroke
427 cid will have a 3.784 inch stroke

It would seem, you have either a good trusty 390 FE engine or 410 - 428 .
Remove the # 1 spark plug, set the harmonic dampner to TDC and try the dowel method once again.
Alright, i'll do the dowel method again tonight when i get home, this time i'll have a friend with to get the exact measurements of the stroke. I'll let you know how it turns out. The partial serial number doesn't do any good, i assume. Thanks for the replies. I'll get back to you when i find out.
Its the 390. I double checked the stroke a few times, its a lil over 3 3/4 so its the 3.784 stroke and i highly doubt its a 427 because there are no crossbolts for the mains. There are a few other stampings on the block besides the partial vin, ones on the drivers side of the block, up by the head on the block, on the flat boss there. Any ideas what it means, i'll pull the number off of it later if it might mean anything.
Most FE/FT blocks have generic casting numbers. Same casting number was used for many different bore blocks. So if it did have a casting number...chances are it's no help anyway. About the only thing you can tell is the date code and the foundry from the outside. About the only way you'll do a postive ID is to measure the cyl bore. Otherwise it's mostly speculation.
Oh and the 29 and others like that are just part of the mold numbers. All the block molds were numbered so if a problem was detected farther down the line the offending mold could be pulled for repair and replaced.
