I am curious what most people are getting for egts on level ground and under a climb up hill. My temps usually run as high as 9000 degs up a steep hill, then settle back around 5000-6000 on level runs? Is this normal?
What mods do you have and is your thermocouple pre or post turbo? I'm curious about the same thing because the other day climbing a good hill at 65mph I had temps to 900 post turbo. No load (just 4 guys, shotguns, clays and ammo) with superchip on performance tow setting. Post turbo temp. Seems high to me for that. Is it?
Post turbo, I run about 500 - 600 towing (16,000 GCW) on level ground. It won't go over 900 climbing hills towing. It's a about the same empty on level ground and barely goes above that climbing hills. What mods do you have?
It'll makes a huge difference if you get rid of the flat downpipe and cat. Then install a free flowing intake and exhaust. I could even tell the difference between a 3 1/2 and 4in exhaust - both in power and EGTs.
This past weekend towing an enclosed trailer and car I saw 1150 (pre turbo)several times and it looked like it would have gone higher had I not let out of it some. What is the maximum temp allowed? Doesn't aluminum melt around 1220?
max sustained temps of 1250 pre turbo. short burst over that are considered ok. short burst the combustion chamber won't ba as hot as the gases. heat transfer over sustained periods is the problem.
Before I put my IC with the injectors I have I was running 800 at 65 on flat ground. and hammer down I could easily go over the read line. Now with IC I am seeing 6-700 flat ground and from 65 to speedo buried it will hover 11-1200. But drag race style runs can still go over 1250 no problem.
About alum melting at 1250*, there are many other factors playing in this. Our pistons are oil cooled and the difference in temp is not really known but 1250 is a safe number people throw around. Duramax engines can hold 1400 for less than 5 minutes I read in diesel mag once, they have alum heads.
