Hi out there,
I need some help from my fellow ford fans.
my truck is a 69' f-100, 360 2bbl, with a t-18 manual trans and 9" axle.
my very 1st 4 wheel vehicle was a 70' f-100 with a 240" 6 and 3 on the tree. i love these old trucks and drive my current one daily. It is rough right now but will be pretty nice when i can spend some TLC time with it. my questions today are...1) what is the 4th gear ratio in a t-18 and 2) what is the axle ratio if the axle code on the door tag is 17? Thanks all for any help.
PS. i will have many more questions later with regards to maximizing fuel economy; is this the right place or do i need to be in another catagory?
Thanks again.

Don't have refs for the T-18 ratios, but here the rear axle ratio:
17 = Ford 9 Inch WDM-H-S / 3.25-1 / 3300lb Rear Axle Capacity
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the info. I'm trying to figure out where everything stands so that i can work on maximizing my fuel economy. There is a good story about how i got this truck ( and why i am commited to keeping it) but i really need to improve my mileage.
Thanks again, Chris
Thank you also wizzard.
I am grateful for the input. Next question is what else can i do to improve fuel economy? I have considered everything from headers' 4bbl carb/intake, and advancing cam timing to swapping in a 6 cyl motor. all out power is not my goal. I have nothing to tow. i just want to keep this truck on the road as economically as possible.
camekanix, How much money do you have to spend? Folk come here asking questions and then they go shopping, find out what they have to spend and get discouraged.
The rear end change will give you the most bang for the buck. Your 360 will pull a 2.75 gear but will take the umpth out of it.
Next is electronic ignition, Duraspark or something like a Pertronix, along with a tune.
Dual exhaust would be next, forget the headers for economy.
Lastly is intake and carb change, if the inside isn't built to work with a different carb you are wasting money.
All of these items cost money. I think I listed them in an order that will give you the most for the least. These ol bricks were not built for economy so don't expect a lot. Slowing down is the best thing that costs nothing.
Hi John,
Yeah; money is an issue. Mechanically the truck is fine and it only has 54k original miles. In my research i have come across many tips and ideas for more performance and better fuel economy. i will not be towing anything at all with this truck so power is really not an issue. I just need to get better mpg. Wizard mentioned tires; this truck rolls on new (but old school) 7.00 x 15 bias treads. rib front, traction rear. the rears actually measure just a hair under 30" diameter. Thanks again for all the help.
The FE engine simply isn't known for fuel economy. I have a '68 F250 with the 360 and 3.73 gears. I installed an Edelbrock performer intake and 600cfm carb along with a Duraspark ignition conversion and saw only a tiny improvement over the 500cfm 2-bbl. My mileage is really dependent on my driving style and vehicle load, but I've never seen better than 12 out of it, and can still get down into the 9s. (I once got 7 with a loaded trailer with the old carb/manifold). I was planning to install headers, but my plans for this truck have changed in a big way. I would like an O/D unit in it to help out, but with the FE I still doubt that I could ever see anything above maybe 15 empty on the highway...downhill, with a tailwind!
At one point I was considering swapping in a 351W with an O/D tranny and 3.54 gears in order to get the mileage up a bit...maybe even EFI.
Well Guy's, Fuel economy is no longer my primary concern. Replacing my truck is. A fella in a dodge truck ran a red light anf hit the left front corner mine at around 55mph. It still got me home but is not a daily driver anymore. Hoping to find another very soon though. Will keep you posted!!!
Hi all,
Thanks for the support. I am fine. As far as impacts go this was as soft as it gets.
The other driver admitted he was going 55 mph (in a 45mph zone) and knew he ran the red light becase as he spun around he saw that it was red. It really was funny, even at that time. I guess adrenaline makes you honest. he has insurance and we are trying to work it out. I should know about a settlemwnt tomorrow. I already found my next truck; provided it is still available when I call the seller tomorrow. I found a 68' f-250, 390, 4bbl, c-6 auto yesterday. Test drive went well and the owner is way cool so hope it works out. Will keep you all posted. Thanks.
Good News!!! Well, so far anyway. the insurance company would have given me about $600 for the truck since it was not exactly a restored classic type of machine. the guy who hit me was a good sport and gave me a cashiers check for the same amount as the truck i mentioned before cost. I am supposed to pick it up tomorrow after work. the seller is a true enthusiast too. He has 5 old fords and had to weed out 1 or 2 due to space considerations. Things really worked out well over all. I'll post back tomorrow after i get the new unit home.
