95 Bronco Starting Issues

Just last night I had my first minor problem with my 95 EB Bronco 302 auto. I had been idling for about five minutes, then turned it off. Went to turn it on two minutes later and got a familiar solenoid "clunk" from under the hood. Did it a couple more times, then I just held the key in the start position and it caught and started right up. Today it started once with no trouble, then a couple hours later when I went out I had to hold the key in the start position for a couple seconds to start it. It makes the clunk, then will start if you just hold the key there. Any suggestions? Haven't gotten a chance to fiddle around with wires yet, been busy.

Before buying any new parts, check all battery cable terminals, especially ground to engine. Trouble is probably either starter solenoid or ignition switch. You can jump terminals on solenoid ( batt pos to starter side). That will tell you if it is solenoid. Jump the batt pos to one of the smaller terminals, and this will bypass the switch. Be careful when using jumper wires, because engine will turn over. Good luck.

All right, finally had some time to get underneath her and check all the wires in the starter relay. Turns out there is a small wire that branches right before the starter from the battery cable and connects to the starter with a plastic clip that has been burned and frayed by contact with the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. I moved the wire, but the coating is fried and the copper is oxidized. I plan on splicing in a new section of wire and insulating the whole mess, but should I be worried about the wire gauge? This wire is very thin, so I doubt it is carrying much current to the starter.

LAST EDITED ON 04-May-01 AT 08:55 PM (EST)[p]Swenson, you can splice in a larger gauge wire with no problems. In fact, I would recommend it. Make sure you get a good splice, and make sure connection to starter is tight. Sounds like you found the trouble. Later, Don
