Well, the gen 2 L weighs just under 5000 lbs. The lowest curb weight listed for that body style is 3800 lbs. 1000 lbs really isn't that hard to add to a vehicle.
I've had my truck on 2 or 3 different scales and they all say the same thing.
The gen 1's are also a lot easier to remove weight from. Fiberglass body panels are available and lighter, which isn't the case for the gen 2 since the stock panels are fairly light to begin with.
I will agree that the aftermarket does favor the GEN 1 trucks indeed. I do believe the iit'll come around, and those parts will be available for the GEN 2's as well. But given the curb weight of both 1 & 2 (4480 vs. 4670), they're not that far apart in stock form.
I always thought basic weight reduction was about the same for both models; tailgate, lighter wheels, sway bar(s), interior pieces, etc, and it was easier to remove the spare tire from my 01 F-150 than my 94 GEN 1.
Even when the aftermarket comes around it will still more difficult to remove weight from a gen 2. Adding a fiberglass hood actually makes it heavier because the stock hood is fiberglass. The fenders are also very light but I think they are steel.
I've been thinking about this a little bit and I don't think it would be very difficult to add 1000 lbs to a base model. The 351 probably has at least 50 lbs on the 300, an E4OD is a lot heavier than a 5 speed, a set of L1 wheels and tires are probably 100 lbs heavier than the 15" alloys, the L frame is thicker, probably 100 lbs of sway bars and associated hardware, a stronger rear end, etc. The above is probably 600 lbs difference.
