Question one or two CATs?

Forgive me if this has already been answered. On my 96 150, 351 4x4 I was wondering if what looks like a smaller cat(original y-pipe) comes before the 'real' cat or if thats just a hollow 'collection' chamber?

Two cats on these fords. The two pipes go into the first cat. Then there is a single pipe then the second cat.

Correct. One cat serves as a y-pipe.
