Folks, I think someone pulled a fast one on me (say it isnt so!). I purchased an 84 Bronco with a 300 and 4sp OD which I thought nothing of until I went to change the clutch. It seems this tranny is the SROD which is'nt normally found in 4X4 vehicles. I have had nothing but trouble trying to locate parts for the thing. Anyhow, after changing out thew clutch I find out the input shaft bearing is bad. I called Ford to try and research parts, what a fiasco! What we finally end up with is two part numbers, one for a bearing that is press fit and one that is slip fit. So which is it? Is there anyway short of tearing it down to find out? I'd like to order the part and have it on hand for when I pull the tranny again. He could'nt find the bearing on the west coast so it will be sometime before it gets here. I tried the local boneyards but found nothing, one place told me the last one they sold went for $700.00. I couldnt stop laughing. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!
That can't be the factory tranny, can it? the only place I've ever seen that single rail POS is behind a 2.3 in a mustang.
I've got a friend with an 88 F-150 4x4. It's got the 300 and a 5-speed, looks like a T-5, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't think it would be too complicated a swap if you could find one. All I know is I'd scrap the SROD. There is a reason Ford only used them for three years.
Roger, that is from the factory. Everyone says the same thing but when I went to Ford they confirmed that the Bronco came with them. How they determined who got screwed I don't know. I guess it pays to do a little research before buying a vehicle I'd swap it if I new what would fit in there. I dont want to be changing driveshafts though. Thanks for the reply
