"Yeah, the bellhousing looks a little like the 460. It's about the same size and shape but the four lower bolt holes are drilled in different places. Ditto for the dowel pins. They also weren't drilled for starter mounts."

Well, even assuming he's really talking about the bell housing and NOT the adapter plate (I say that because the starter mounts to the adapter plate IIRC) then drilling the holes in the right location in the bellhousing should be do-able. As long as the castings are the same the "bosses" for the holes should still be there - even if the holes aren't.
You can bolt a ZF 6 out of a 2002 Power Stroke to a 85 6.9 engine with no trouble at all.
The 6.9 tranny will bolt up to the 7.3 Power Stroke just as easy.
But you can not bolt it to any gasoline motor that Ford sold.
The 6.0 bolt pattern I never looked into, but I bet it is the same as 7.3 was.
