I hate TV

First off, this is FE related.

So anyone else see the American Muscle Car with the "fastest muscle car engines" shootout?

For anyone that didn't here's the "specs"
The motors had to be stock/stock blueprint with a max of .060 overbore and stock or CFM macthing carburetion. they specifically stated "no ringers" would be allowed in the build.

The motors ran were the 409/409, Pontiac SD 421, street hemi, 427 Tunnelport (the said it was a 64 tunnelport , i think they meant high-riser) , and the L88.

Results:
- 1962 Chevy 409 - stock HP rating : 409hp
Result : Hp 406 Torque 430

- 1964 Ford 427 - stock HP rating 425 HP
Result : HP 637 Torque 554

- 1963 Pontiac 421 SD - stock HP rating 405 HP
Result : HP 488 Torque 470

- 1966 Dodge 426 Hemi - stock HP rating 425 HP
Result : HP 820 Torque 689 (Out of a "blueprint street hemi")

- 1967 Chevy 427 L88 - stock HP rating 425 HP
Result : HP527 Torque 501

So no ringers, eh?

The funny thing is I saw a post over on Moparts and they were even calling the hemi a ringer as well as the "tunnelport" (i'd have to agree, since i think it was a HR).

Then the guy that actually built the motor for the show posted saying the show had a totally different spin than what he was instructed to do. He said he was told to build the motor more or less as a superstock with typical speed tricks from the era so it had stuff like a mechanical cam and reworked heads (unshrouded valves, port smoothing, bowl work, etc).

Why can't producers just present a show the way it was shot? Now there's just more ammunition out there for the Hemi-or-nothing guys no matter how unfounded the evidence may be.

Anyway, rant off. I just thought it was going to be a fair show, but how silly of me, right?

Exactly, i don't directly care what the show says but a dodge guy i know is already trying to hang it over my head that a "stock street" hemi makes 820hp. I know it's a load of BS so it doesn't really bother me, it's just that it gets annoying when i know it's a load and he's blinded by "i saw it on tv and they said it was stock so it must be stock".

That's why i think it should be presented as shot, so as to stem the flow of misinformation.

I couldnt agree more.. thats why I'd send his silly butt to the library to bring me documentation. Then for kicks make him count on one hand the number of titles a Hemi holds and on the other the Fords (lets see if he needs those unfolded fingers to keep counting Fords)

If the guy is a big enough moron to believe anything he saw on TV, then he really isn't worth listening to. He probably believes politicians and lawyers too.

Ok, here's a story for you. I have it on video to PROVE IT.

Back in early 90's my wagon was running 13.0's and still street legal. Buddy had a Hemi clone '65? GTX. It was bone stock street Hemi. It was a SLUG!!!! I need to watch vid again but I think it was low 15's? It was about as stock as a hemi could get(something someone would have actually BOUGHT off the showroom floor), not something built to superstock specs. Granted, it probably pulled really hard in high gear, but with stock gearing(like 3.25 or 3.55) it was not quick at all. Definitely NOT 800+ hp!!

We ran off one time at QuakerCity dragway when a group of us rented the track for an afternoon of fun. I was still running a 8" slick, cast iron headers(opened), and leaving around 3500 rpm on stock 428CJ motor(mild cam only).

"TV"...........it's all about the WOW factor. Truth is optional(and usually not used).

I beleive ya Freight!! Back in my HS days a kid in town had a HEMI Cuda I used to whoop on a regular basis with a 428CJ in a 68 Mustang fastback. My car was stock other than soild cam, Koni's and springs His was supposedly a stock trim Hemi. But he did at least a cam that I know of. I'd take him by at least a fender if I spun and a car length if not. Every time! pissed him off pretty good too. This was long ago Fri nite street racin. Mine was a stick tho and his a slushbox. That might account for something maybe.

Also wasn't that shoot out supposed to be stock engines that were in production cars? The 427 was for sure a tunnelport and they never came in anything cept over the counter in 67. LOL. I think the MR or HR would have been just as close. And yea the Hemi was a ringer for sure. Aluminum Hemi rods they "happen to have" hangin round the shop. Sheesh! Wonder if a die grinder just "happened" to slip inside those Hemi ports too??

LOL

Supposed to be stock production, or that's the way the show presented it.

That's why a 1964 427 TP didn't jive (wasn't around in 64 and was never production) and neither did a 820hp "street" hemi.

They need to do a real live for true totally stock build with accessories and exhaust as installed in the vehicle. It'd be the only way to be fair, but then they wouldn't have these huge numbers to generate buzz.

Sounds to me like you should start looking for stock Hemi parts for him to buy and build his elephant. He should have no trouble getting 800 HP...they did it on TV!

The only real test I've seen lately of "stock" muscle cars was done on Dream Car garage. Those cars were running REALISTIC numbers for what they were. None were super stock spec motors. Couple in the 12's, but mostly in the 13's. That would be about right.
