hard to figure out from here, but try simple things first, such as changing the fuel filter, esp if it runs fairly well at lower speeds when hot ... and has some hesitation on acceleration whether hot or cold.

shucks..i like to suggest and do the simple things first.
do you think it's downshift: from OD or 3rd gear to low?..
or, a fuel cut-off? the fuel pressure can be checked easily at the fuel rail, there is a schader valve there for testing and purging.
lastly, is the new fuel filter a ford filter?
I have no clue really, mainly because my 96 is obdII and I need a factory manual to check the sensors and pcm codes

Could be high speed misfire. Assuming you have no MIL or Check Engine light scenario, and the fuel pressure checks out ok...

Things to check (swaptronics if necessary) are the TFI ignition module, located under the hood on driver's side fenderwell near the firewall; distributor pickup; cap and rotor; if your motor is 351/5.8L, ensure the wires for #7 and #8 cylinders are on opposite ends of the loom (these cyls fire sequentially); battery connections and engine ground; loose connectors to sensors, the computer, or engine harness.

There are no doubt others, but those come to mind.

Good luck!
