I am trying to set up a website that will run on the FTE servers - pride makes me want to make it one of the better chapter websites. But we are limited in what we can do. Worse, we have to write it in html, with maybe a little php action. I know nothing about these, and will need help.
Ed, our southern California buddy, has sent me the address of his pickups limited website. We will not be able to match his due to FTE limits, but we can still use his group's website for ideas. see www.pickupslimited.com
I also want to do a newsletter - something we can send out to prospective members and others that may be interested in our activities. Again Pickups Limited have a good example of what I want. http://www.pickupslimited.com/Newsle...L%20050607.pdf
What do you guys think? Is this worth doing, or should we just forget it?
Yes, we are members of FTE, and they get paid by page views. It is not fair to take their viewers away. If it was I would have built it several months ago using my www.old-fords.com website.
They require just one member be allowed to make changes. I can not even make a change if someone else is made webmaster. FTE has a lot of strange rules - but it is their site and all you can do is to live with them.
Articles will be submitted to me, I will edit them, and forward them to the webmaster who will publish them on our website. I have newspaper experance, and will fill in as needed.
All that is fair. This is the FTE site. We're not interested in shunting dollars away from their support. Can FTE support a database driven collaborative regional site that permits some flexibility?
What? I have no idea what that is - can you code it using html? That is what they require.
Not straight HTML. It can be done with PHP, ruby, or perl with an HTML interface. It may well be that what I'm describing is not available for regional sites. It was just a thought.
It is all Greek to me. I nothing absolutely nothing about website design, coding, html or whatever. I used to have a html program called Dreamweaver, but never took the time to learn it so I got rid of it.
It is all Greek to me. I [know] nothing absolutely nothing . . . . I . . . never took the time to learn. . .
And your point is? What are you saying? What do you want us to do?
Are you saying you do not want us to build a website, or not to do a newsletter?
You get a vote on this - I don't want to keep anyone from posting or expressing an opinion. I am just making sure I understand correctly - you are voting against any website or newsletter?
I think my point was made absolutely clear in my last post. I know nothing about coding, designing or building a website. I had a chance to learn, when I had the Dreamweaver program, but never got around to learning it so I got rid of the program.
For the record it was supposed to have read "I know absolutely nothing about website design" I put a second nothing in there instead of know. With that aside I have read and re-read my last post, and nothing in there says I don't want you to build a website, or do a newsletter, so I have no clue how you came up with that idea.
I think that Nighteyes has the same reply to the question, as I do. Simply put, I don't know anywhere close to enough to even have an input on this. I will trust folks like WillyB and OldDog, who are much smarter than me in cyber world, to make the right decisions on this.
Not trying to shrug responsibility, or any sense of ownership in the chapter, but this is over my head. I only posted so you didn't think that I wasn't interested. Just baffled, is all.
Go get'm smart guys.
Tim
Is there a link where I can review the features/limits of the regional site web page services offered by fte? I could then better speculate as to how far this could go. Do they offer any cgi scripts? Hit counters even? If it is just straight html and disk space, that makes it pretty clear. If they offer other elements, there may be possibilities.
I . . . I have read and re-read my last post, and nothing in there says I don't want you to build a website, or do a newsletter, so I have no clue how you came up with that idea.
The question I asked in the first post, and the subject of this thread was "What do you guys think? Is this worth doing, or should we just forget it?" I even included some examples from the Pickups Limited group.
Nighteyez, I thought since you answered the thread you had an opinion on the question the thread asked. Why else post?
Tim, your answer says you can not help with the coding, but do not object to the idea. That helps, in that there is nothing more discouraging than to do a bunch of work trying to do something only to discover that only you care about the idea.
And, just so everyone understands, all of us will be contributing to the newsletter and website. You do not need to code to write something for this, and many, including nighteyze, have already sent me photos I will be using.
And, as far as I can tell, all FTE is offering is straight html and disk space. However, I have not been able to talk with a professional web developer from the FTE website.
I don't think a poll is necessary. If only a couple of folks vote yes (I vote yes), that is enough. It all comes down to who has enough time. Bring it on.
A poll is different, and does not encourage a discussion on the subject. It is the discussion I am after.
Notice there was room and even an invite for more names and discussions under the name polls, yet you still chose to start a new thread with your discussion. It is just human nature!
