how do you tell if ball joints are bad or worn out. i got a 78 f150 with the 44 in front, 9 in rear 6'' of lift on 38.5 super swampers. mine look pretty crappy couple joints are missing that lock ring. any info would be greatly appreciated. trying to solve a larger problem. !death wobble!
to check ball joins you jack the vehicle up till the wheel is hanging in the full down position above the ground use a big crowbar and stick under the tire and lift up on the tire and look for excessive movement.
If you have a buddy, you can look at the joint and have someone move the steering wheel back and forth. If it is bad enough, you will see it. It has worked for me in the past with great results; No jacking. Give it a try. If no movement is seen, THEN jack it up.
I make 'em nice and snug. Tighten them up really good, then back off enough to put the cotter key in the castellated nut.
If my memory serves me correctly, it's 100 f lbs on the top and 60 on the bottom.........not 100% but I think that was it. You could probably call schmucks, if they have them in stock it'll say in the instructions in the box.
As per instructions (what I do remember ) DO NOT back off nut when you reach torque spec, turn nut until you are able to get the welcome back cotter pin in.
Does that have a high steer 44? Flat knuckle I think it's called.
If you are going to replace them shoot me a PM, I did mine a few weeks ago, I have some tips that might save you a few bucks in labor at the machine shop.
