I have a 9inch on my 77 Ford 150 4x4.I started using my truck more often since I rebuilt it and thinking about starting to haul hay again with it.The trailer comes out to about 5,000 pounds, and i usually go about 60 miles max.Since the last time i pulled my trailer i've add 35's and a little more power to the 351 over stock.im pretty sure the axle can hold up,but im considering beefing it up a little.what kinda mods can i do to the axle to strengthen it up.Oh yeah ill also be mud boggin alot so thats another concern of mine.
you should consider your axle spline/ diameter...if it is 28 spline, then you could swap over to a 31 spline axle....much stronger....plus there are housing braces available that you weld on to strengthen the housing...theyre around 60-80 buckaroos....plus, you can change the gear ratio to compensate for the large tires....4.11s would be suitable....just make sure you purchase a quality ring and pinion....additionally, a locker would be good while your at it...
I agree although I would opt for a bolt on brace. Too much welding on the housing and it will warp. When I have narrowed and braced housing, the last thing I do is weld on the bearing ends with the jig in place. You would be surprised how much the housing warps when you ad a brace.
